Intentionality can be a game-changer
Have you ever noticed how elite athletes or performers prepare just before they take action? Whether it’s stepping onto the track or walking on stage, they all take a moment to breathe. They center themselves. They focus on what’s next, slowing everything down to concentrate fully on the intention of their next action.
In sales, this same intentionality can be a game-changer. It’s about slowing down and aligning every action with a purpose—whether it’s picking up the phone, greeting a new opportunity, or presenting a solution. When you approach each action with clarity and purpose, you create a more meaningful connection with your customer and drive better outcomes.
Action Steps to Practice Intentionality in Sales:
- Breathe and Center Yourself:
Before taking any action—whether it’s making a call, sending an email, or walking into a meeting—pause for a moment. Take a breath, and ask yourself: What am I intending to accomplish here? - Example: If you’re making a follow-up call, your intention might be to schedule the next step or gain clarity on the customer’s needs.
- Focus on Who You’re Being:
Consider how you want to show up in each interaction. Who are you for the person you’re about to speak with? Who are they for you? Being intentional with your presence demonstrates genuine interest and care. - Be Present in the Moment:
When greeting a customer, take conscious actions to be fully present. Notice their energy, tone, and body language. Meet them where they are in their buying process with curiosity and empathy. - Example: Instead of jumping straight into a pitch, start with a warm greeting and a question like, “What brings you in today?” or “How can I help you?”
- Practice One Action at a Time:
Intentionality is about slowing things down and focusing on this action before jumping to the next. When you focus on one step at a time, your customers will feel seen, heard, and valued—which builds trust and leads to better outcomes. - Evaluate Your Interactions:
At the end of each day, reflect on your actions. Were you intentional in your conversations? Did you achieve the outcomes you set? If not, what adjustments can you make for tomorrow?
