Being Intentional Takes Practice

All of this talk about intentionality can seem daunting at first. The idea of consistently focusing your energy and attention might appear exhausting. And maybe, at the very beginning, it is.

But consider this: intentionality is a practice, not perfection. It’s about bringing yourself fully into the present moment and becoming aware of what’s happening around you—the environment, the people, and the conditions—that might impact your actions and intentions.

The more you practice being present and intentional, the easier it becomes. Over time, it will feel less like an effort and more like second nature. The resistance you feel at first will diminish, and intentionality will become part of who you are: someone who is focused, deliberate, and consistently produces results, even in challenging circumstances or with difficult people.

Action Steps to Build Your Intentionality Practice
  1. Start Small:
Take one task or sales interaction today and approach it with intentionality. Ask yourself:
    • What do I want to achieve here?
    • What outcome would make this interaction a success?
Focus on aligning your actions with that outcome.
  2. Create a Daily Practice:
Begin each day by setting a clear intention. For example:
    • “I will listen deeply to my clients today and identify their true needs.”
    • “I will focus on making meaningful connections during every call.”
Use this intention as your guide throughout the day.
  3. Reflect and Adjust:
At the end of the day, reflect on how well you aligned your actions with your intentions. Where did you succeed? Where could you improve? This reflection will help strengthen your practice.
  4. Practice Presence in the Moment:
Before starting any action—a call, a meeting, or even responding to an email—pause. Take a breath, and focus on being fully present. This simple pause can significantly enhance your intentionality.
